If you're heading to Europe this summer, you're probably trying to pack smart - light enough to avoid checking a bag, but still prepared for long walks, crowded tubes, and unpredictable heat. After a recent 5-day trip across London and Paris, I can confidently say: there are a few items that saved my sanity (and feet). Best part? They all fit in your carry-on.
Whether you're exploring cobblestone streets or hopping between cafes and landmarks, these 5 essentials are worth every ounce of space.

1. Portable Charger (With Fast Charge Capability)
Your phone will be working overtime; directions, restaurant searches, translation apps, photos, and digital train tickets. A regular charger won't cut it.
Look for a compact portable charger with fast-charging support (think USB-C or Power Delivery). I used mine at least twice a day and was especially grateful during long days out when I didn’t return to the hotel until late.
Tip: Bring a short charging cord to keep your bag from turning into a tangle of wires.

2. Universal Adapter (European)
Europe’s outlets are not a one-size-fits-all situation. Between the U.K. and continental Europe, you’ll need different plug types. A universal travel adapter with USB ports saves space and keeps everything charging from one outlet; your phone, portable fan, camera, and more.
Some even come with built-in surge protection, which is great for peace of mind.

3. Blister Pads (Variety Pack!)
I don’t care how “comfortable” your shoes are - European summers mean miles of walking, and blisters happen. A variety pack of blister pads saved me halfway through Day 1 in London, when my sneakers started to rub up in the back.
The thicker gel ones are great for heels, while the slim ones work well on toes and sides of your foot.
Keep a few in your day bag. You do not want to limp through the Louvre!

4. Crossbody Shoulder Bag (Passport-Sized and Hands-Free)
You want something small enough to be easy, but big enough to hold your essentials: passport, phone, portable charger, a couple of cards, and blister pads. A crossbody or belt-style shoulder bag that zips closed and lies flat to your body is ideal for both security and convenience.
Paris metros and major tourist spots can get crowded - having your valuables secure and close is key.

5. Small Portable Fan
If you’ve never walked through Paris in June or July with zero AC and no breeze… let’s just say, this is not an optional item. A small handheld or neck fan will be your best friend during museum queues, crowded subways, and restaurant patios.
I kept one clipped to my bag and used it in taxis, trains, and even while waiting for sunset at the Eiffel Tower.
Tip: Recharge it at night with your portable charger.

You don’t need to pack your entire bathroom drawer or every “just in case” item to survive a summer in Europe. But packing smart means knowing what’s worth bringing - and what’ll save you time, stress, and sore feet. These five carry-on-friendly essentials did exactly that for me.
